Production
Blue Hawaii was the first of three Elvis films shot in Hawaii, followed by Girls! Girls! Girls! in 1962 and Paradise, Hawaiian Style in 1965. Producer Hal B. Wallis was very keen to include Presley in a film showing how soldiers influence a man. Actress Juliet Prowse, who starred in Presley at the GI Blues, was approached to become her love interest again. However, after his demands were filed, Paramount decided to drop him as a candidate for the role, choosing Joan Blackman instead. Presley looked so pale before shooting, so Wallis personally recommended a tanning lamp brand to darken his skin. The film was announced in the fall of 1960 as the Hawaii Beach Boy . At the time, film producer Walter Mirisch had the same movie titled in production, "Hawaii" , and he was furious that Wallis had chosen a similar name.
Presley arrived in Hawaii on March 18, 1961, to prepare for a charity concert he performed on March 25 to raise funds for the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. He arrived at the recording studio on March 21st to start recording the movie soundtrack. Three weeks later, the location shooting has been completed, including scenes at Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head, Mount Tantalus, and Hanauma Bay, a volcanic crater that opens out to the ocean, near Kai Kai's bedroom community, a few miles away from Waikiki. After filming the location, the crew returned to Paramount a lot to complete another scene for the movie. Presley will relax during filming by giving karate demonstrations with friends and employees, Red West, resulting in Presley's fingers becoming bruised and swollen. Wallis warned the female stars of the film to avoid parties held by Presley as they turned to a tired-looking shoot.
Producer Hal Wallis will use box office return from Blue Hawaii to fund the upcoming Wallis movie, 1964's Becket , starring Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole.
Presley is 26 years old when the film is released, and Angela Lansbury is not yet 36 years old playing the mother of her character. Nancy Walters, who plays an older schoolteacher, is in fact only 18 months older than Presley.
Most of the films were taken at a location at Coco Palms Resort on the east coast of Kauai. The resort has been abandoned since Hurricane Iniki in 1992.
Although mentioned in the movie that Chad's parents live in K? Hala, one of the most expensive and exclusive areas in Honolulu in 1961, the view from their "lanai" (porch or porch) shows Diamond Head as it emerges from Waikiki and downtown Honolulu. In fact, K? Hala is located on the other side of Diamond Head from Waikiki.
There are several scenes that are filmed inside and around the famous Waikiki Beach, including the opening driving scenes, as well as the office scene across the street from "International Market". The scene where the Chad client lives in a hotel and where he took his tour group - as well as the beach that spent time with his girlfriend - all filmed on a property now known as the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki Beach.
