Life and career
Early life
Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25, 1947, at Pinner, Middlesex, the eldest son of Stanley Dwight (1925-1991) and the only child of Sheila Eileen (nÃÆ' à © e Harris; 1925-2017), and was raised in the council house by his grandfather. maternal grandmother, at Pinner. Her parents married in 1945, when her family moved to the nearest semi-detached house. He was educated at Pinner Wood Junior School, Reddiford School and Pinner County Grammar School, until the age of 17, when he left just before the A-Level exam to pursue a career in the music industry.
As he began to seriously consider his musical career, Elton John's father, who served as a flight lieutenant at the Royal Air Force, tried to steer him toward a more conventional career, like banking. John has stated that his wild stage costumes and performances are his way of escaping after such a rigorous childhood. Both John's parents tend to be musically motivated, his father has become a trumpeter with Bob Millar Band, a large semi-professional band playing in military dance. The Dwights were sharp record buyers, exposing John to popular singers and musicians that day, and John recalled immediately glued to rock and roll when his mother brought home records by Elvis Presley and Bill Haley & His comet in 1956.
Elton John started playing piano at the age of three, and within a year, his mother heard him pick Winifred Atwell "The Skater's Waltz" by ear. After performing at parties and family gatherings, at the age of 7 he took formal piano lessons. He showed musical talent at school, including the ability to write melodies, and gained some fame by playing like Jerry Lee Lewis in school. At the age of 11, he won a junior scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. According to one of his instructors, John immediately twisted, like a "record", a four-page sheet by Handel he'd heard for the first time.
For the next five years, he attended Saturday classes at the Academy in central London, and has stated that he enjoys playing Chopin and Bach and singing in chorus during Saturday classes, but that he is not an industrious classical student. "I hate going to the Academy," he said. "I'm one of those kids who can get away without training and still graduate, scratching grades." He has claimed that he will occasionally skip classes and get around on the Tube. Some instructors have testified that he is an "exemplary student," and for the last few years, he took lessons from a private tutor in addition to his class at the Academy.
Elton John's mother, though also strict with her son, is more agile than her husband, and something free of spirit. With Stanley Dwight not interested in his son and often physically absent, John grew up mainly by his mother and maternal grandmother. When his father is home, the Dwights will have terrible arguments that make their child very depressed. When John was 14, they divorced. His mother later married local painter Fred Farebrother, a caring and supportive stepfather whom John affectionately referred to as "Derf", his first name in reverse. They moved to No. flat. 1A in an eight-unit apartment building called Frome Court, not far from the two previous homes. It was there that John wrote songs that launched his career as a rock star; he stayed there until he had four albums simultaneously at American Top 40.
Pub Pianist became a staff of songwriters (1962-1969)
At the age of 15, with the help of her mother and stepfather, Reginald Dwight became a weekend pianist at a nearby pub, Northwood Hills Hotel, playing Thursday through Sunday night. Known only as "Reggie", he played a variety of popular standards, including songs by Jim Reeves and Ray Charles, as well as songs he wrote himself. Tasks with a short-lived group called Corvette complete the time.
In 1962, Dwight and his friends formed a band called Bluesology. During the day, he runs a job for music publishing companies; he split the night between a solo show at a London hotel bar and worked with Bluesology. In the mid-1960s, Bluesology supported soul tourism and R & B American musicians such as Isley Brothers, Major Lance and Patti LaBelle and Bluebelles. In 1966, the band became a band supporting musicians Long John Baldry, and played 16 times at the Marquee Club.
In 1967, Dwight answered an ad in the British New Musical Express magazine, placed by Ray Williams, then manager of A & amp; R for Liberty Records. At their first meeting, Williams gave Dwight an unopened envelope of the lyrics written by Bernie Taupin, who had answered the same ad. Dwight wrote music for the lyrics, and then posted it to Taupin, starting a continuing partnership. When the two met first in 1967, they recorded what would be the first Elton John/Bernie Taupin song: "Scarecrow". Six months later, Dwight used the name "Elton John" in tribute to two Bluesology members: saxophonist Elton Dean and vocalist Long John Baldry. His name was legally changed to Elton Hercules John on January 7, 1972.
Tim Elton John and Bernie Taupin joined DJM Records Dick James as a staff songwriter in 1968, and for the next two years wrote material for various artists, among them Roger Cook and Lulu. Taupin will write a set of lyrics in less than an hour and give it to John, who will write music for them within half an hour, discarding the lyrics if he can not find something quickly. For two years, they wrote easy-listening songs for James to peddle singers. Their initial results included a challenger for the British entry for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1969, for Lulu, called "I Can not Go (Life Without You)". It came sixth out of six songs. In 1969, John gave the piano to Roger Hodgson on his first single released, "Mr. Boyd" by Argosy, a quartet completed by Caleb Quaye and Nigel Olsson. Elton John is also a session musician for other artists including playing piano on Hollies 'He Is not Heavy, She's My Brother' and singing backing vocals for Scaffold.
The debut album for Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1969-1973)
At the suggestion of music publisher Steve Brown, John and Taupin began writing more complex songs for John to record DJMs. The first is the single "I've Been Loving You" (1968), produced by Caleb Quaye, former Bluesology guitarist. In 1969, with Quaye, drummer Roger Pope, and bassist Tony Murray, John recorded another single, "Lady Samantha", and an album, Empty Sky . For their follow-up album, Elton John, Elton John and Bernie Taupin listed Gus Dudgeon as producer and Paul Buckmaster as musical regulator. Elton John was released in April 1970 at DJM Records/Pye Records in the UK and Uni Records in the US, and set the formula for the next album - rock-chorded rockers and painful ballads. The first single from the album, "Border Song", went into the Top 100 US, culminating in Number 92. The second single, "Your Song", reached number seven on the UK Singles Chart and number eight in the US, becoming John's first hit single as a singer. The album soon became her first hit album, reaching number four on US Billboard 200 and number five on the UK Albums Charts.
Supported by former drummer Spencer Davis Group's Nigel Olsson and bassist Dee Murray, Elton John's first American concert took place at Troubadour in Los Angeles in August 1970, and was a success. The Tumbleweed Connection concept album was released in October 1970, and reached number two in the UK and number five in the US. The live album 17-11-70 ( 11-17-70 in the US) was recorded on a live show aired from A & amp; R Studios at WABC-FM in New York City. Direct album sales were hard hit in the US when an east-coast hijacker released the show a few weeks before the official album, including all 60 minutes of the broadcast, not just 40 minutes chosen by Dick James Music.
John and Taupin later wrote the soundtrack for the obscure movie Friends and then Madman Across the Water , the latter reached number eight in the US and produced hit songs, "Levon ", and the opening song of the album" Tiny Dancer ". In 1972, Davey Johnstone joined Elton John Band on guitar and backing vocals. Released in 1972, Honky ChÃÆ'à ¢ teau became John's first US number one album, spending five weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 and starting the successive seven consecutive US numbers, respectively. one album. The album reached number two in the UK, and spawned hit singles "Rocket Man" and "Honky Cat". both recorded at Trident Studios in London.
The pop album Do not Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player came out in early 1973 and reached number one in the UK, USA, Australia amongst others. This album resulted in the hits "Crocodile Rock", US Billboard her first Hot 100 number, and "Daniel"; number two US, number four UK. Both the album and "Crocodile Rock" are the first and single albums, each on the consolidated MCA Records label in the US, replacing other MCA labels including the Union.
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road , released in October 1973, gained instant critical recognition and topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic, remaining at number one for two months. It also temporarily sets John as a glam rock star. It contained the US number 1 "Bennie and the Jets", along with other hits, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", "Candle in the Wind", "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" and "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding". Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is included in the VH1 Classic Album series, discussing album creation, recording, and popularity through live video concerts and recordings including interviews.
Company Rocket Recordings to 21 at 33 (1974-1979)
John formed his own label called The Rocket Record Company (distributed in the US by MCA and originally by Island in the UK) and signed the act for it - notably Neil Sedaka ("Bad Blood", where he sings background vocals) and Kiki Dee - with who he is taking personal interest. Instead of releasing his own record at Rocket, he chose the $ 8 million US dollar contract offered by the MCA. When the contract was signed in 1974, the MCA reportedly issued an insurance policy of US $ 25 million on John's life. In 1974, MCA released her Great Britain, British and US number-one diamond-certified Diamonds by RIAA for the sale of 16 million copies in the US.
In 1974, a collaboration with John Lennon took place, resulting in Lennon's appearance on Elton John's single cover of The Beatles "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", B-side which is "One Day at a Time" Lennon. In return, John is featured on "Whatever You Get Through the Night" on the album Lennon Walls and Bridges . Later that year in what will be Lennon's last major performance, the couple made a two-hit number along with The Beatles classic "I Saw Her Standing There" at Madison Square Garden in New York. Lennon made a rare stage appearance with John and his band to keep the promise he made that he would appear onstage with him if "Anything That Makes You Through the Night" became the number one US.
Caribou was released in 1974, becoming John's number one third in the UK, and topping charts in the US, Canada and Australia. Reported to be recorded in two weeks between live performances, it featured "The Bitch Is Back" and which is set to "Do not Let The Sun Come to Me". "Step into Christmas" was released as a stand-alone single in November 1973, and appeared on the 1995 remastered album remastered issue.
Pete Townshend of Who asked John to play a character called "Local Lad" in the rock opera film Tommy , and to perform the song "Pinball Wizard". Drawing on a power chord, John's version was recorded and used for a movie release in 1975 and the single came out in 1976 (1975 in the US). The song is mapped at number 7 in the UK. Bally then released a pinball machine "Captain Fantastic" which features John's illustrations in his movie.
The 1975 autobiography album Captain Fantastic and Brown Dirt Cowboy debuted at number one in the US, the first album to do so, and was in the top spot for seven weeks. Elton John revealed his previous ambiguous personality on the album, with Taupin lyrics depicting their early days as songwriters and musicians struggling in London. The lyrics and accompanying photo books are impregnated with a particular sense of place and time that is rare in his music. "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" is the hit single from this album and captures an early turning point in Elton John's life. The release of this album marks the end of Elton John Band, as John is unhappy and overworked to ignore Olsson and Murray, the two who have contributed a lot from the band's signature sound and who have helped build their immediate followers from the start.
According to Circus Magazine, spokeswoman John Reid said the decision was reached jointly by phone when John was in Australia promoting Tommy . He said there was no way Reid could fire them "because the band was not employed by John Reid, they were employed by Elton John." He went on to say Nigel would return to his solo work and Dee would do a work session "and maybe cut out a solo album".
Davey Johnstone and Ray Cooper are retained, Quaye and Roger Pope return, and the new bassist is Kenny Passarelli; This part of the rhythm gives the heavier backbeat audible. James Newton Howard joins to organize in studio and play keyboard. In June 1975, John introduced a line-up in front of 75,000 spectators at London's Wembley Stadium.
Rock-oriented Rock of the Westies rocks into the US album charts at number 1 such as Captain Fantastic, a feat previously unachieved. Elton John's wardrobe now includes ostrich feathers, $ 5,000 glasses that spell his name in lights, and dress up like the Statue of Liberty, Donald Duck, or Mozart, among others, at his concert. In 1975, Elton received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
To celebrate the five years since he first appeared in the venue, in 1975 Elton John played two nights, four performances at Troubadour. With seats limited to under 500 per show, the opportunity to purchase tickets is determined by the postcard lottery, with each winner being allowed two tickets. Everyone who attended the show received a harsh "yearbook" from the band's history. That year she also played piano at Kevin Ayers' Sweet Deceiver , and was among the first and fewer white artists to appear on the black Soul Train music series on American television. On August 9, 1975, John was named a remarkable rock figure of the year at the first annual Rock Music Awards at a ceremony held in Santa Monica, California.
In 1976, the live album Here and There was released in May, followed by the album Blue Moves in October, containing the single "Sorry Seems to Be The Hardest Word". His greatest success in 1976 was "Do not Go Breaking My Heart", a duet with Kiki Dee who topped the UK and US charts. Finally, in an interview with Rolling Stone that year, entitled "Elton's Frank Talk", John declared that he was bisexual.
In addition to being the most commercially successful period, 1970-1976 was also considered the most critical. In just three years, between 1972 and 1975 John saw seven consecutive albums reach number one in the US, something that has never been achieved before. From six of Elton John's albums to make Rolling Stone ' list of "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" in 2003, all came from this period, with Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was ranked at number 91; Similarly, three Elton John albums were given five stars by Allmusic ( Tumbleweed Connection , Honky ChÃÆ'à ¢ teau , and Captain Fantastic ) all of this period.
During the same period, he made guest appearances on the popular Morecambe and Wise Show on the BBC. Both comics spend episodes pointing him in any direction except the stage to prevent him from singing.
In November 1977, Elton John announced he was retiring from the show; Taupin started collaborating with others. Now producing only one album per year, John released A Single Man in 1978, hiring a new lyricist, Gary Osborne; the album resulted in no singles making the top 20 in the US but two singles from the album released in the UK, "Part-Time Love" and "Song for Guy", both made the top 20 in the UK with the last reaching 5. In 1979 , accompanied by Ray Cooper, Elton John became one of the first Western artists to tour the Soviet Union, as well as one of the first in Israel. John returned to the top ten US with "Mama Can not Buy You Love" (number 9), a song originally rejected in 1977 by MCA before it was released, recorded in 1977 with Philadelphia Thom Bell soul producer. John reports that Thom Bell was the first person to give him sound lessons; Bell encourages John to sing on the lower list. Albums influenced by discos, Victims of Love , are not well received. In 1979, John and Taupin reunited, though they did not collaborate in the full album until 1983's Too Low For Zero . 21 on 33 , released the following year, was a significant career enhancement, aided by his biggest blow in four years, "Little Jeannie" (number 3 US), with lyrics written by Gary Osborne.
