iPhone 5 is a smartphone designed and marketed by Apple Inc. This is the sixth generation iPhone, replacing the iPhone 4S and ahead of iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. Officially unveiled as part of a press event on September 12, 2012, was released on September 21, 2012. iPhone 5 was the first iPhone announced in September and set the trend for the next iPhone release, the first iPhone to be fully developed under the guidance of Tim Cook and the last iPhone which is supervised by Steve Jobs.
The iPhone 5 displays major design changes compared to its predecessor. These include aluminum-based bodies that are thinner and lighter than previous models, higher screens with almost 16: 9 aspect ratio, Apple's A6-on-chip system, LTE support, and Lightning, a new compact dock connector that replaces the 30-pin design used by previous iPhone models. This is a second Apple phone that includes a new 8-MP camera made by Sony, which was first introduced on the iPhone 4S.
Apple began accepting orders in advance on September 14, 2012, and more than two million received within 24 hours. Initial demand for iPhone 5 exceeded the available supply at launch on September 21, 2012, and described by Apple as "amazing", with pre-orders being sold twenty times faster than its predecessor. While receipts to the iPhone 5 are generally positive, consumers and reviewers note hardware problems, such as unintentional violet in the captured photos, and phone layers prone to chipping. Acceptance is also mixed on Apple's decision to switch to different dock connector designs, as changes affect iPhone 5 compatibility with accessories that are otherwise compatible with previous iterations of the line.
IPhone 5 was officially discontinued by Apple on September 10, 2013 with the announcement of its successor, iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. IPhone 5 has the shortest life span of the iPhone ever produced with only twelve months in production, breaking with standard practices Apple sells existing iPhone models at cheaper rates on new model releases, replaced as midrange and then entry-level devices by iPhone 5C ; 5C's internal hardware specifications are almost identical to 5 despite having a cheaper polycarbonate exterior. The iPhone 5 supports 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 but not iOS 11 which was released on September 19, 2017. iPhone 5 is the second iPhone to support five major iOS versions after the iPhone 4S.

History
The rumor about iPhone 5 started shortly after the iPhone 4S announcement, though the detailed leak does not appear until June 2012. As of July 30th, 2012, the report shows the date on which iPhone 5 will be unveiled. and released, along with some accurate predictions about its features. On September 4, 2012, Apple announced it will hold an event at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco on September 12, 2012. A shadow of the number 5 is shown in an invitation sent to the media, indicating that the next iPhone will be unveiled at the event.
At the opening, Apple announced the iPhone 5 and also introduced the new iPod Nano and iPod Touch models. They also state that pre-orders will be accepted starting September 14, 2012. More than two million pre-orders are received within 24 hours. Initial demand for new phones exceeded the record set by its predecessor, the iPhone 4S, by selling more than 5 million units in the first three days. On November 30, 2012, Apple added an unlocked version of the iPhone 5 to their US online store, with a 16 GB model starting at US $ 649.
IPhone 5 was officially discontinued by Apple on September 10, 2013 with the announcement of its successor, iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. While 5C shares almost the same internal hardware as the iPhone 5, 5C uses a low-cost poly-carbonate plastic box instead of the original 5 aluminum form. The 5C introduction deviates from Apple's previous market strategy, where previous iPhone models will still be manufactured, but are sold at a lower price point under the new model.
On April 28, 2014, Apple initiated a memory recall program to replace any failed power buttons of the iPhone 5 model manufactured before March 2013 at no cost. On August 23, 2014, Apple announced a program to replace the iPhone 5 model battery that "may suddenly experience a shorter or more frequently charged battery life" sold between September 2012 and January 2013.
Litigation
After the release of iPhone 5, Samsung announced that they filed a lawsuit against Apple for violating eight patents. The case is scheduled to begin in 2014. In a statement, Samsung said it "has little choice but to take the necessary steps to protect our innovation and intellectual property rights". Litigation between the two involves patent infringement has been ongoing and is being fought in several court cases around the world.

Production
The components and power required to build the most basic iPhone 5 is estimated to cost US $ 207, which is more expensive US $ 19 than component cost for the corresponding iPhone 4S model. The LTE module on the iPhone 5 alone costs $ 34, $ 10 more than the mobile module on iPhone 4S. Similarly, the screen used on iPhone 5 costs $ 44, which is more expensive $ 7 than its predecessor screen. Mashable noted that the profit margins of each device's sales are "very large" because the iPhone 5 retail costs US $ 649.
After the device announcement, the lack of proven supply. This is due to lack of components such as screens. The report appears, stating that Sharp was unable to deliver the screen before the iPhone 5 debut, and other manufacturers reported that it was difficult to meet demand. As a result, the number of pre-orders increases due to inventory uncertainty in retail stores, and delivery dates for pre-orders are postponed to dates that are after the initial release date of the device.
String quality control supervisor
China Labor Watch, a New York-based NGO, reported that "three to four thousand" Foxconn workers working at the iPhone 5 production plant in Zhengzhou stopped working on October 5, 2012. The strike came after Apple implemented more stringent quality standards. on their products, which include a 0.02-mm limit on the indentations generated during production, and the imposed demands associated with scratches on the skeleton and back cover. The strike was also linked to an employer who forced employees to work on public holidays. The report states that training is inadequate for the expected quality demands and causes employees to produce products that do not meet the standards. During a strike, conflicts between quality control and employee controls result in fights. China Labor Watch also claims that the concerns raised by the inspectors are not handled by factory management. Foxconn spokesman acknowledged that there was a micromanagement problem, but also said that there were only 300 to 400 workers absent and the conflict did not affect the production process. In November 2012, Foxconn chairman Terry Gou reported that the delay in production was due to undisclosed difficulty in assembly.
Features
Operating system and software
IPhone 5 iOS feature, Apple's mobile operating system. The iOS user interface is based on the concept of direct manipulation, using multi-touch gestures. The interface control element consists of sliders, switches, and buttons. Interactions with the OS include gestures like swipe , tap , pinch , and inverted block , all of which have specific definitions in context of iOS operating system and multi-touch interface. Internal accelerometers are used by multiple apps to respond to device shake (one of the common results is an undo command) or rotate vertically (one of the common results is to switch from portrait mode to landscape mode).
The iPhone 5 ships with iOS 6, released on September 19, 2012. Many of the iPhone 5 features that work specifically with the included iOS 6.0 operating system only work in certain regions of the release. Apple says this is a rolling program, which will take longer to apply in more areas.
This phone can act as a hotspot, share internet connection via WiFi, Bluetooth, or USB, and also access the App Store, an online application distribution platform for iOS developed and maintained by Apple. This service allows users to browse and download apps from the iTunes Store developed with Xcode and the iOS SDK and published through Apple.
iPhone 5 can play music, movies, television shows, ebooks, audiobooks and podcasts and can sort its media library with songs, artists, albums, videos, playlists, genres, composers, podcasts, audiobooks, and compilation. Options are always presented alphabetically, except in playlists, which retain their order from iTunes. Users can rotate their device horizontally to landscape mode to access Cover Flow. As in iTunes, this feature shows a different album cover in the scroll-through photo library. Scrolling is done by swiping a finger across the screen. Alternatively, headset controls can be used to pause, play, jump, and repeat the track. In iPhone 5, the volume can be changed with Apple Earphone included, and the Voice Control feature can be used to identify tracks, play songs in a playlist or by a particular artist, or create Genius playlist.
Like the iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 has Siri, which allows users to operate the iPhone with spoken commands. The software is upgraded on iOS 6 to include the ability to make restaurant reservations, launch apps, dictate Facebook or Twitter updates, take detailed movie reviews and sports statistics.
On iPhone 5 , sending messages can be helped by a voice assistant, which converts speech to text. In addition to regular SMS, messaging on iPhone 5 supports iMessage, a dedicated instant messaging program and service that allows unlimited text delivery to other Apple devices running iOS 5 or later. It supports the inclusion of content such as images and sound in text messages, integration with device voice control software assistants, and reads thank-you for sent messages. The input to the device comes from the keyboard displayed on the multi-touch screen or by voice-to text by speaking into a microphone. The inserted text is supported by predictive software and suggestions; there are multi-lingual spell checkers that recognize many regional accents from different languages.
iOS 6 features some new and/or updated apps, including Apple Maps and Passbook. The default Apple Maps app, which replaces the previous Maps app supported by Google Maps, has been universally mocked and lacks the many features available in competing map apps. It uses Apple's new vector-based machine that removes lag, making zoom smoother. New to Maps is turn-by-turn navigation, 3D viewing in some major cities and real-time traffic. iOS 6 can retrieve documents such as boarding passes, entrance tickets, coupons, and loyalty cards through its new Passbook app. IOS devices with Passbook can be scanned beneath the reader to process mobile payments in locations that have compatible hardware. This app has context-aware features like notifications for relevant coupons when around a particular store.
Facebook comes integrated via Apple's original app with iOS 6. Facebook features can be directly accessed from within native apps such as Calendar that can sync Facebook events, or use buttons like Facebook from within the Apple App Store.
New privacy settings available to users. In addition to location services, the following have been added to iOS 6: photos (already partially restricted on iOS 5), contacts (address book), calendar, reminder, bluetooth sharing, Twitter, Facebook and Sina Weibo. iOS 6 also comes with user control "Restrict ad tracking" in the general settings menu to allow users the option to prevent targeted ads. Apple Ad Identifier replaces the Unique Device Identification (UDID) standard of an existing company. Ad networks that have not used Apple's Ad Identifier device identification standard will be unaffected, though Apple will require future standards.
Design
Apple emphasized improving the quality of making iPhone 5 on its press event. The frames used in previous versions were redesigned to use aluminum composite frames. iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S use non-aluminum stainless steel because of Steve Jobs's preference for the metal he thinks, "looks beautiful when worn".
The iPhone 5 is 18% thinner, 20% lighter, and has an overall volume of 12% less than its predecessor, the iPhone 4S. The body of the aluminum phone is 0.30 inches (7.6 mm) thick. At the September 2012 conference, Apple claims it is the world's thinnest smartphone by 7.6 mm, though the claim is debatable because Oppo Finder China is thinner and some other smartphones can be considered thinner, depending on where thickness is measured. The Oppo Finder measured 6.65 mm (0.262 in) at the thinnest point and 7.1 mm (0.28 inches) at the thickest point so that overall is thinner than the iPhone.
Hardware
iPhone 5 uses a system on a chip (SoC), called Apple A6. The SoC is comprised of a 1.3 GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, and a tri-core PowerVR SGX543MP4 running at 266 MHz. The operating memory of iPhone 5 (LPDDR2-1066 eDRAM) is duplicated, from 512 MB to 1 GB. The available storage capacity is set at 16, 32 or 64Ã, GB, equal to 4S; memory card plug-in is not supported. Two black color options (with black glass and trim-colored metal trim), and white (with silver-white trim and silver metal trim); again the same color option (though different implemented) like its 4S predecessor. The iPhone 5 maintains an 8 megapixel rear camera on the iPhone 4S, but has improved low light performance, and has 40% faster photo shoots than its predecessor, while having a purple color when a strong light source is present in the photo.. The front camera, accessible via FaceTime and the camera app has a lower resolution, at 1.2 megapixels. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery with 1440mAh capacity is built and can not be replaced by the user; it is rated at <= 225 hours of standby time and <= 8 hours of talk time. There are three different phone models available: one support CDMA and two GSM versions. This can have a knock effect for which version of the device actually works in which country/region. This phone uses SIM nano, smaller than micro-SIM from iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S .
Benchmarking hardware performed using Geekbench and GLBenchmark validates some of the claims Apple has entered on their website and is mentioned at the time of the device launch, which includes twice as fast and twice the graphics performance. In Geekbench's overall hardware assessment, the iPhone 5 receives a score that is roughly 2.5 times higher than the iPhone 4S. Benchmarks made using GLBenchmark for iPhone 5 produce a score that is 2 times better than the iPhone 4S. But the results are not consistent because the 3D graphics benchmark assessment using Passmark produces a score that is only about 1.45 times better than the iPhone 4S. AnandTech's battery life assessment concluded that the battery life is shorter on the iPhone 5 than its predecessor when performing certain tasks, but while performing other tasks, the iPhone 5 battery lives longer than the iPhone 4S.
The Retina display is 1,136 ÃÆ'â ⬠"640Ã, pixels with almost exactly 16: 9 aspect ratio (minus one extra horizontal pixel line). With a 4 "diagonal it has a screen size of 6.7 inches square, compared to 5.7 on the iPhone 4 and 4S.The pixel density remains the same as the 4S model, which is 326 pixels per inch. The screen icons of the iPhone 5 are arranged in a six-line matrix four icons each.An enhanced screen size enables the sixth array of icons to be added to the five lines on the iPhone 4. Touch sensor technology inside the cell from Sharp Sharp screen that allows for thinner phones, 44% more screen color saturation great from its predecessor.
There are three microphones (placed in front, side and back) for noise cancellations and video calls.
Accessories
The iPhone 5 , as well as iPod Touch (5th generation), iPod Nano (7th generation), iPad (4th generation), and iPad Mini have a new dock connector named Lightning, 30-pin connector Apple Dock was introduced in 2003 by Apple on iPod (3rd generation). The Apple Lightning connector has eight pins and all digital signals. This new connector is smaller than the previous one, helping the iPhone 5 to be slimmer than its predecessor. The Apple Lightning cable has duplicate pins on both sides of each plug, so it can be inserted by rotation. Various accessories will be available to convert the Apple Lightning connector to an older 30-pin Apple Dock connector or USB, though not all old accessories will work, as not all signals are available, specifically video output and iPod Out features for BMW cars.
Earphones known as Apple EarPods are included with the iPhone 5 and other devices announced at Apple Media event on September 12, 2012. They replace the earphones that came with the iPhone and iPods of the previous generation. According to technology commentators, the redesign of earphones is aimed at improving sound quality by allowing air in and out more freely. Apple states that redesigning their earphones allows it to "rival high-end headphones that cost hundreds of dollars more". Reviews by Gizmodo and TechRadar report that although the redesigned earphones sounded better than their predecessors, reviewers feel that the sound quality produced is poor.
Network compatibility
AT & amp; T, Verizon, and Sprint offer LTE access in the US, while in the UK, only EE and Three can offer LTE access. On March 26, 2013, T-Mobile announced that it will start bringing the iPhone 5, making it the first iPhone available on all four national carriers in the United States. The T-Mobile version of the iPhone has a modified version of the iPhone 5 A1428 model that enables Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) support. All operators in Canada who sell iPhone 5 have their own LTE network, including Rogers Wireless, Fido Solutions, Bell Mobility, Virgin Mobile Canada, Telus Mobility, and Koodo Mobile.
There are 42 bands that are officially recognized for LTE, but the launch is merged around more popular bands, based on what has historically been available in certain areas. In Europe, available bands for LTE, 2.6 GHz (3G expansion band) and 800 MHz (cleared from analog TV), with 1,800 MHz appearing in several places including the UK. In Germany, the only supported carrier network is T-Mobile with the 1,800 MHz band allocated to LTE. Some countries in Europe, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and others - will not be able to offer LTE connectivity via iPhone 5 to their customers on their current LTE network, as they have used LTE in 2.6 GHz band, which iPhone 5 does not support. In November 2012, representatives from Swisscom reported that the iPhone 5 only supports LTE on networks that have been tested and certified by Apple.
Unlike the iPhone 4S, which is the only "world phone" produced by Apple, there are three versions of the iPhone 5, which are different from the frequency used. All three work on 2G GSM/GPRS and 3G UMTS/EDGE networks on the 800 and 1900 MHz bands used in the Americas, and 900 and 1800 MHz bands used elsewhere. The CDMA A1429 model works on CDMA networks, such as Sprint and Verizon. Other versions support LTE only on the 1700/2100 MHz AWS band, and the 700-MHz band recovers after conversion to digital television in the US (channel 52-56), currently the only network that supports this band is AT & T. GSM A1429 supports several other LTE bands available in other countries, such as LTE band 1, 3, 5.
Reception
Critical reception
The iPhone 5 received mainly positive reviews from commentators and reviewers. Stevens's team of Engadget praised the iPhone 5 for its high resolution screen that exceeds iPhone 4S , which it considers to be one of the best mobile phone screens available in the market. Stevens is critical of the new connectors, which are not compatible with devices and cables that use the replaceable 30-pin connector, though LA Times report that this is a necessary change to make the device smaller than its predecessor.. Engadget agrees that Apple meets most of the appointments listed on its website, such as "better battery performance", "dual graphics performance", and "twice as fast". David Pogue of The New York Times considers the 4-inch Retina to display "a nice change but not life-changing", and praises the Lightning connector for its size, robustness and reversibility, while noting the lack of support for more accessories old, commented that "Apple has a long history in shutting down technology, uncomfortable and expensive, that people have fallen in love". Ed Baig's technology columnist from USA Today is impressed that Apple has fulfilled the public's "noble hopes" for the iPhone 5 in a competitive marketplace. In a review of capacity improvements, iFixit found the iPhone 5 easier to dismantle and repair than its predecessor.
Wired reported that the iPhone 5 design, run on iPhone 5S and iPhone SE, is considered the "old golden child of Apple phone design and benchmark for mobile phones in general", while the next iPhone Design 6/6S is lacking gets critical recognition because "it feels a bit wrong, as if you were holding a $ 650 soap straw". Wired describes the iPhone 5 as "elegance rooted in the way aluminum and glass work together." It feels sleek, yet substantial, different from the iPhone 6, which feels substantial in size alone, plus, unlike rounded corners at everywhere from 6, iPhone 5 does not really look like any other on the market at that time ". However, the design of the iPhone 5 is not suitable to improve, unlike the iPhone 6/6S that can better accommodate the growing consumer trend to a larger screen size and indeed spawn phablet 6/6S Plus model.
Criticism
Reviewers and commentators are very critical of the new Maps app that replaces Google Maps on iOS 6. It has been reported to contain errors such as misplaced landmark tags, directing users to the wrong location and bad satellite images. Nine days after the release of Maps, Apple issued a statement apologizing for frustrated customers and recommended that they try alternative mapping services.
Error
Editor Gizmodo Diaz discusses correspondence between Apple and the reader about the purple flare in photos taken on the iPhone 5 camera. Apple's response to this problem is that it's normal and advise customers to steer the camera away from bright light sources while taking photos. The tests performed by TechCrunch indicate that the problem exists on the iPhone 4S but is clearer and clearer on the iPhone 5. Consumer Reports found that the purple mist effect occurred on several other manufacturers' phones including Samsung Galaxy S III and Motorola Droid Razr Maxx, and it was not overwhelming on iPhone 4S. The report concludes that digital cameras in general, including top-class SLRs, can all suffer from lens flares in which the purple effect is unusual.
Problems
There are anecdotal claims from the loose iPhone 5 layer, showing bright aluminum underneath. Apple's executive response to email correspondence from affected customers concluded that it was normal to scrape aluminum. The term "scuffgate", a reference to "antennagate" that affects iPhone 4, is applied by various sources such as CNET, Yahoo News, and All Things Digital to illustrate blisters.
Some users reported on the Internet that white models leaked behind the scenes, though the issue was not unique to the iPhone 5, as it also affects other Apple devices.
Commercial revenue
Techcrunch reported that iPhone 5 was sold twenty times faster than the 4 and 4S models. Apple says that they are "fascinated by customer response". Phil Schiller, Apple's vice president for worldwide marketing, said that more than two million orders of iPhone 5 have been received within the first 24 hours. AT & amp; T says that the iPhone 5 is the fastest-selling iPhone the company has ever offered, selling over five million units at the launch weekend and exceeding the available supply. The release and sale of iPhone 5 has also slowed Android growth according to market share reports released by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. During the first 16 days after the initial release of the phone, this phone covers more than 20% of all phones sold in that period.
Principal economist J.P. Morgan, Michael Feroli said that "iPhone sales could boost US annual GDP growth by $ 3.2 billion, or $ 12.8 billion at an annual rate." Shortly after the announcement of iPhone 5 and before launch, Apple's stock price rose to a record $ 705.07, but in three months it fell to $ 507.48. According to Eric Savitz's analysis, Apple's share decline and the resulting loss is not the result of problems with the new Maps app, but disappointing investors. He pointed to the initial hardware sales of only five million, compared with a projection up to two-fold, as the main cause.
Since the release of iPhone 5, previous generation iPhone discounts have enabled Apple to maintain market advantage in the United States and Japan, but the iPhone continues to lag behind the combined total of Android phones in the global market.
