Life and career

Born in Brantford, Ontario, Stewart was first elected to parliament in the 1993 election. He was a close friend of Prime Minister Jean Chrà © Ã… © tien, and was immediately appointed to the important position of Minister of National Income and then Minister of Indian Affairs. In 1999, he was transferred to the Human Resources Development Department (HRDC), the government department with the largest budget. Stewart is widely viewed as having leadership ambitions, and is supported by ChrÃÆ' © tien.

This ambition was ended by the so-called "billion-dollar boondoggle" in which ineffective accounting practices at HRDC allegedly caused millions of dollars unaccounted for. While the problem at HRDC was largely derived from the time of its predecessor, Pierre Pettigrew, Stewart received severe attacks but also the Minister widely seen to have cleaned up the mess left by his predecessors. He did not resign and, according to some, ChrÃÆ' © tien stood by his side throughout the ordeal.

He remained the minister in charge of HRDC until Paul Martin became Prime Minister on 12 December 2003. He was transferred to the backbenches because of his position as a loyalist on the overthrown ChrÃÆ'Â © tien. He retired from politics on February 13, 2004, to become Executive Director of the International Labor Organization. In July 2005, he left his job with the ILO to return to Canada and marry Henry Stolp's businessman. He has returned to the ILO as Executive Director and currently resides in New York City.

With the announcement that Martin resigned as Liberal Party leader, a group called "Liberal for Jane" hopes to see Stewart seeking party leaders. This was ruled out when Stewart accepted the position of Chief of Staff to act as Opposition Leader, Bill Graham. Only a few weeks later, Stewart resigned from the post due to family obligations. He was replaced by former cabinet minister Andy Mitchell.

From 2006 to May 2007 Stewart was the chief negotiator for the province of Ontario in the land dispute of Caledonia. In 2008, Jane became the Volunteer Chief for the Brant United Way.

Stewart comes from a family of politicians. His father, Robert Nixon, is the leader of the Liberal Party of Ontario, while his grandfather is Ontario's prime minister, Harry Nixon.
