Madeline is a series of books, part of Madeline's media franchise, originally created by Ludwig Bemelmans. The series follows the daily adventure of Madeline, a 7-year-old girl attending a boarding school in Paris with eleven other girls, under the care of their teacher, Miss Clavel.

The first book was published in 1939, and proved successful, so Bemelmans wrote many sequels in the 1940s and 1950s. The series continues, written by Bemelmans grandson John Bemelmans Marciano. In the first book, "daddy" Madeline sent her a dollhouse when she was recovering from an appendectomy operation, and all the girls went to visit their parents in the book Christmas . In 1998, the series has sold over 15 million copies worldwide.

Each book in the series begins with a poem:

"In an old house in Paris
It's covered with vines
There are only twelve little girls
In two straight lines. "

Madeline is the smallest but bravest of the twelve girls at boarding school. She is only 7 years old and is the only redhead in school. He has many adventures there, including falling off the bridge and being rescued by a stray dog, and meeting Pepito, the brat next door.

Books

The original series by Ludwig Bemelmans consists of six books:

  • Madeline - Madeline is suffering from appendicitis and has to go to the hospital to have her appendix removed.
  • Madeline's Rescue - Madeline falls off a bridge and is rescued by a stray dog, who joins her school. Winner of Caldecott Medal 1954.
  • Madeline and Bad Hat - The Spanish ambassador is moving next door, and Madeline considers her son Pepito evil and spoiled.
  • Madeline in London - Madeline visits Pepito, who moves to London.
  • Madeline and Gypsy - Madeline and Pepito escape to join a group of traveling gypsies.
  • Madeline's Christmas - Madeline celebrates Christmas with her friends.

At the time of the 1998 film adaptation release, the series has sold over 15 million copies worldwide making it one of the best-selling book series of all time.
