The Sukhoi Su-30 (Russian: ?????? - 30 ; NATO reporting name: Flanker-C ) is a twin-engine and two-seat fighter developed by the Sukhoi Flight Company in Russia. It is a multirole fighter for interdiction missions in-weather, air-to-air and air-to-surface.

The Su-30 began as an internal development project at Sukhoi Su-27 by Sukhoi. The design plan was revamped and the name was made official by the Russian Ministry of Defense in 1996. From the Flankers, Su-27, Su-30, Su-33, Su-34 and Su-35 have been ordered to be limited or serial production by the Department of Defense. Only the Su-37 remains a prototype. The Su-30 has two distinct branches, produced by competing organizations: KnAAPO and Irkut Corporation, both under the umbrella of the Sukhoi group.

KnAAPO manufactures the Su-30MKK and Su-30MK2, designed for and sold to China, and then Indonesia, Uganda, Venezuela and Vietnam. Due to KnAAPO's involvement from the early stages of the development of the Su-35, this was basically a two-seat version of the mid-1990s Su-35. The Chinese choose the older but lighter radar so that the canards can be removed in return for increased payloads. It is a fighter with air supremacy and attacking ability, generally similar to the US F-15E.

Irkut has traditionally served the Soviet Air Defense and, in the early years of Flanker development, was given the responsibility to produce the Su-27UB, a two-seat trainer version. When India showed interest in the Su-30, Irkut offered the Su-30MKI multirole, derived from a modified Su-27UB with avionics suitable for fighters. Along with ground attack capabilities, the series adds features for air superiority roles, such as canards, thrust-vectoring, and remote-range array radar. Its derivatives include Su-30MKM, MKA, and SM for Malaysia, Algeria, and Russia, respectively. The Russian Air Force operates several Su-30s and has ordered the Su-30SM version.

Development

While the original Su-27 has a good range, it still lacks sufficient reach for the Soviet Air Force Defense (PVO, as opposed to VVS - Soviet Air Force). The Air Defense Force needed to cover the vast expanse of the Soviet Union. Therefore, development began in 1986 on the Su-27PU, an enhanced capability variant of the Su-27 capable of serving as a long-distance interceptor or air command post.

The Su-27UB two-seat fighter trainer was chosen as the base for the Su-27PU, as it has a single seat Su-27 performance with seating for two crew members. The "proof-concept" demonstrator flew June 6, 1987, and this success led to the commencement of development work on two Su-27PU prototypes. The first Su-27PU flew in Irkutsk on December 31, 1989, and the first of three pre-production models flew on April 14, 1992.

Design

Su-30 is a multirole fighter. It has a two-seat cockpit with airbrake behind the canopy.

Aviation Characteristics

Integrated aerodynamic configurations, combined with vectoring thrust control capabilities, yield high maneuverability and unique takeoff and landing characteristics. Equipped with a digital fly-by-wire system, the Su-30 is capable of performing some very sophisticated maneuvers, including Cobra Pugachev and tailslide. These maneuvers quickly reduce the speed of the plane, causing the fighters to chase for overshoot, as well as breaking the Doppler radar lock, as the relative speed of the aircraft falls below the threshold where the signal goes into the radar.

Powerplant

The airplane's powerplant incorporates two Saturn AL-31F after a low-bypass offpassing turbofan engine, which flows through the intake ramp. Two AL-31Fs, each rated at 123 kN (28,000 lbf) of full afterburning thrust ensure Mach 2 at flight level, 1,350 km/h speed at low altitudes, and a 230 m/s climb rate.

With a normal fuel reserve of 5,270 kg, the Su-30MK is capable of a 4.5 hour combat mission with a range of 3,000 km. The air refueling system increases the range up to 5,200 km (3,200 mi) or flight duration up to 10 hours at the height of the yacht.

Avionics

The aircraft has autopilot capabilities at all stages of flight including low-altitude flight in terrain-following radar mode, and individual and group combat work against air and surface/sea-surface targets. Automatic control systems connected to the navigation system ensure flight routes, target approaches, recovery to airfields and landing approaches in automatic mode.

Operational history

Syria

Several Su-30SMs were sent to Syria under Russian military intervention in Syria to escort and provide target information for bombers who launched air strikes against Islamic rebel groups. Su-30SM fighters were reportedly sent to Bassel Al-Assad International Airport in Latakia, Syria in September 2015. At least four Su-30SM fighters were spotted on satellite photos. At the end of December 2015, there are 16 Su-30SM at Khmeimim air base.

The Su-30SM was initially tasked with escorting air from Russian attack jets or strategic bombers. Later during the operation, they were assigned to air the land duties as well. On March 21, 2017, rebel forces launched a new offensive in Hama province; A few days later, a video appeared that showed the target of the Russian Su-30SM Air Force strike ground with unfocused air to the ground rockets in a dive attack against the rebels.

On May 3, 2018, the Su-30 Russian Air Force fell shortly after takeoff from Hmeymim Air Base, killing both crew members.

Potential operator

Thailand formally requested information for possible acquisition of Su-30MK/MK2. However, Saab Gripen was bought instead.

In February 2016, Russia and Belarus concluded a preliminary agreement that would see the exports of an undisclosed number of Su-30 to Belarus.

Iran's Defense Minister announced in February 2016 about his country's intention to purchase a number of undisclosed Su-30SM fighters.
