Company History
Thrifty Car Rental was founded in 1958 as an indirect subsidiary of Thrifty Rent A Car System, Inc. Thrifty expanded their rental service with the purchase of Snappy Car Rental, Inc. based in Ohio for $ 40 million USD in May 1989.
At the end of 1989, Thrifty agreed to be purchased by Chrysler Corporation for $ 263 million USD in order to merge Thrifty with the Pentastar Transportation Group. With a focus on value-added car rentals, Chrysler announces Cheap Car Rental and Dollar Rent A Car will join the Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group with the intent to reduce operating costs in 1997. This change is overseen by Chairman and CEO Joseph E. Cappy, serving from 1993-2003.
Dollar Thrifty Automotive filed to the US Securities and Exchange Commission to offer common stock and was officially traded as DTG on the New York Stock Exchange on December 23, 1997. The same year, information processing and reservation management Thrifty Car Rental was transferred to The SABER Group, Inc.. At the end of fiscal year 1997, Dollar Thrifty Automotive retained 872 locations in the United States and employed 5,400 employees.
In the coming years, the size of the fleet and the total number of locations is increasing in the United States:
- 1999 - 149 US owned company locations with 123,814 vehicles between Dollar and Brand Brands
- 2001 - 130,252 cars operate with 540 locations in the US (including 162 airport locations)
- 2003 - 310 franchised locations owned by the company and 513 in the US
- 2006 - 407 US corporate locations with revenues of $ 1,534 billion USD
- 2010 - Cost-effective rental system includes 331 locations in the US and Canada.
- 2016 - 4,435 US locations along with Hertz parent company and sister company Dollar Rent A Car
After ten years with the brand, President and CEO Cappy retired in 2003. Following the announcement, Gary L. Paxton was promoted from Chief Operating Officer to Chief Executive Officer of Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group on October 1, 2003. Paxton was initially appointed to the senior Dollar Management Panel Thrifty Automotive Group when purchasing Dollar Rent A Car Systems, Inc. was completed in 1990. He will now oversee the daily management and operational strategies for car rental brands until retirement in December 2008. Scott L. Thompson, who joined the company as Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer in May 2008, The newest CEO in October.
Former CEO Hertz Global Holdings and CEO Mark P. Frissora announced the purchase of the $ 2.3 billion dollar Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group on November 19, 2012. This resulted in the car rental company to operate the current brand of Cheap Car Rental and Dollars Renting a car.
Together with the Rent A Car Dollar, Thrifty Car Rental is currently overseen by President and CEO of The Hertz Corporation - Kathryn V. Marinello.

International Growth
With approximately 1,000 car rental locations in 76 countries and territories in December 2010, the Hemat Car Rental began to focus on improving international locations. In 2013, approximately 1,285 international rental locations exist between Hertz, Dollar, and Thrifty brands.
Operating as the largest car rental provider in the United Arab Emirates with 18,000 vehicles, Thrifty introduces its first "Thrifty Lounge" in Burjuman, Dubai's branch in February 2017. The lounge provides free WiFi access, coffee and comfortable seating area. The parent company Hertz Global Holdings announces the Cheap Car Rental will be operating in Colombo, Sri Lanka in May 2017 with a view to boosting regional tourism. Rental options include short-term, long-term, and compact driver services, compact sedans, luxury cars, SUVs and minibuses. The opening was celebrated by Hertz, Dollar, and Thrifty donating a portion of the funds to the Sinha Salsewana Girls Orphanage.
Plans to expand fleet services in Malta were approved in August 2017 in response to increased urban beaches, cities and tourism. With a car rental window at Malta International Airport, Sliema city center, and Gozo Harbor, other European locations are expected in Poland, Turkey and Hungary. Cheap Car Rental retains 472 locations in the US and Canada, as well as 589 storefronts in 77 countries and regions.
Thrifty Australia and Thrifty New Zealand previously owned by Mitsubishi are now owned directly by NRMA in Australia.
Operation and Fleet Rentals
With revenues generated from franchise fees and car rental services, Thrifty concentrates on US and Canadian airport locations with a focus on holiday travelers, tour operators, and small business owners.
Cheap Car Rental offers a diverse rental fleet including Ford, Chrysler, General Motors, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia Motors, and other vehicle manufacturers. Some of Thrifty's fleets include "green" vehicles - especially Toyota Prius and Chrysler's "bio-fuel" models.
Blue Chip Rental Express Program
The Blue Chip Express Rental Rental program of Thrifty Car Rental was introduced in 2008. This free service is available to members in the US and Canada with the following benefits: an accelerated pick-up and return process, vehicle selection, insurance coverage, channel-appointed channels, and synchronize airline gifts.
