Turner Field is a baseball park located in Atlanta, Georgia. From 1997 to 2016, it served as home revenge to the Atlanta Braves of Major League Baseball (MLB). Originally built as the Centennial Olympic Stadium in 1996 to serve as the center of the 1996 Summer Olympics, the stadium was converted into a baseball park to serve as the team's new home. The Braves moved less than a block from the Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, which served as their home baseball stadium for 31 seasons from 1966 to 1996.

Opened during Braves' year "division domination, Turner Field hosted a total of 11 NLDS (1997-2005, 2010, 2013); it also hosted the NLCS four times (1997-1999, 2001), as well as one World Series (1999), one NL Wild Card Game (first in baseball history), and 2000 Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

The Braves played the last game at Turner Field on 2 October 2016, a 1-0 win over the Detroit Tigers. Franchise permits the rental of the facility to expire at the end of the calendar year. In 2017, the team moved to the newly built SunTrust Park, located in adjacent Cobb County.

The stadium has been reconfigured for the second time, redesigned for college football as the State Stadium of Georgia.

History

An average built in the neighborhood of Southeast Atlanta from Summerhill. across the street from the former Braves house, the Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, which was destroyed in the summer of 1997 and replaced by a parking lot. The parking lot is painted with the location of the field and its crude configuration. Part of the outfield wall with a monument marking where the Hank Aaron 715 home run was reassembled at its original location, and still stands today. From 2002 to 2004, the failed Fanplex entertainment center was located adjacent to the stadium parking lot. The stadium has 5,372 club seats, 64 luxury suites, and three party suites.

The most popular name choice among Atlanta residents for the new stadium at construction (according to polls in Atlanta Journal-Constitution) is the Hank Aaron Stadium. After the baseball stadium was named after Ted Turner (and later dubbed "The Ted" by fans), the city of Atlanta renamed the Capitol Street section where the stadium sat Hank Aaron Drive, giving Turner Field a 755 line number, after Aaron's home run total.

Summer Olympics 1996

The stadium was originally built as a 85,000-seat Centennial Olympic Stadium and used for the 1996 Summer Olympics. Soon after the 1996 Summer Paralympics, which followed the Olympics, most of the north end of the stadium was removed to turn it into its permanent use as a 49,000-seat baseball park. The stadium hosted the Atlanta Braves of Major League Baseball from 1997 to 2016, after renovating millions of dollars to retrofit the stadium for baseball by removing a temporary booth that has shaped nearly half the stadium and built stands and other stands behind them..

After the 1996 Olympics was completed, the stadium was hired by Atlanta Braves. Private entities, including NBC and other Olympic sponsors, agreed to pay large sums to build the Centennial Olympic Stadium (about $ 170 million from $ 209 million). The Atlanta Olympic Committee (ACOG) is trying to build a stadium in a way that can be converted into a new baseball stadium, and the ACOG pays for the conversion. This is considered a good deal for the Olympic Committee and Braves. The 71,228-seat Georgia Dome was completed four years earlier by the state of Georgia, so there is no need for a bigger stadium in downtown Atlanta. Furthermore, Braves are already exploring opportunities for the new stadium. Fulton County Provincial Recreation Authority has Turner Field and leases it to Braves, which operates the stadium. The end of Braves' latest lease in 2016 coincides with the team's departure for SunTrust Park.

Due to the need to match the path inside the stadium in the previous configuration, the playing field, especially the dirty areas, though not large by historical standards, is still larger than most MLB stadiums of its era. The fence line around the main north entrance, outside the left field, marks the original area of the Centennial Olympic Stadium.

Substitution

Turner Field is a relatively new facility, younger than 14 of the other 29 Major League Baseball stadiums during Braves' last match there. However, Braves executives complained that its location in downtown limits game presence due to traffic to the city and the lack of on-site parking. The stadium is 1 mile (1200 m) from the closest Atlanta Metropolitan Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) stop, and many fans dare not frighten Atlanta's nuisance to attend the game; plus, the team can not secure more parking. In addition, the VP team for business operations Mike Plant said the site "did not match where our majority of fans came from," because the stadium is close to some of Atlanta's poorest neighborhoods. Plant also said that while Braves operate Turner Field, they have no control over commercial development around the stadium. Other stadiums built in recent years have been accompanied by shopping and entertainment facilities in the surrounding area (such as SunTrust Park later).

According to Braves team leader John Schuerholz, Turner Field requires $ 150 million for renovation costs only for structural maintenance (that is, not for improved fan experience). He estimates that remodeling the fan improvements will cost an additional $ 200 million. The Braves are in talks in 2013 with the Recreation Authority to extend the team's early lease, Plant said, but the talks failed. The mayor of Atlanta, Kasim Reed, said the city was unable to support the desired renovation of the Braves.

After negotiations failed, the team began planning a new stadium, SunTrust Park. The stadium will be built in southern Cobb County, with an Atlanta address, located "near the geographical center of the Braves fan base." The new stadium is built in a public/private partnership. The projected cost is $ 672 million. It occupies 15 hectares (6.1Ã, ha) of 60-acre (24Ã, ha) lots, with remaining space devoted to parking, green spaces, and mixed-use development. The new stadium is part of a 60-acre development called The Battery Atlanta. Although Cobb County is not currently served by MARTA, Braves uses a "circulator" bus system to escort fans to and from the stadium. The construction at SunTrust Park broke on September 16, 2014. If SunTrust Park is late from schedule, Braves has an option (but ultimately rejected) to extend their lease at Turner Field for up to 5 years. Braves executive vice president Mike Plant has stated that capital maintenance will be much less in SunTrust Park. While Turner Field is designed from the ground up with Braves in mind, Plant says that it requires higher capital maintenance costs in the long run because it is a value engineered for the 1996 Summer Olympics. Plant estimates that the capital maintenance cost at SunTrust Park will not more than $ 80 million after 30 years - less than half of the $ 150 million in capital maintenance needed for Turner Field after 17 years.

Georgia State Stadium

In April and May 2014, Georgia State University officials expressed interest in acquiring Turner Field and turning it into an open stadium of 30,000 seats for the Panthers football program. New developments, including retail housing, housing and students, will also begin to be used at the Turner Field website. In addition, a new baseball field will be built on the former Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium site, incorporating an outer wall where Hank Aaron hit his record breaking 715 home run. Although the Mayor of Reed shows preference to the plans of the State of Georgia, there are at least three offers from other developers to consider. On 13 August 2015, Braves officially gave notice to the cities of Atlanta and Fulton County that the team would not use the option to extend their lease at Turner Field and will vacate the stadium on December 31, 2016, allowing the Atlanta Fulton County Recreation Authority to move forward with plans rebuilding. On November 23, 2015, Georgia State submitted an alternative proposal to rebuild Turner Field, where part of the current average will be rebuilt to a new mixed retail and residential development and football stadium will be built north of Turner Field along with a new baseball field. When checking bids for redevelopment, two casino companies show interest in Turner Field properties; However, they did not bid because Mayor Reed and the community opposition to the casino game. On December 21, 2015, the Fulton County Provincial Recreation Authority announced that it has received a joint offer by Georgia State University and a Carter real estate company for stadium properties. Georgia State is considered a front runner for the property because two other proposed offers come from a lesser-known entity without a documented rebuilding experience. Summerhill neighborhood residents expressed their criticism for Turner Field's rapid sales without their input; however, city and county officials claimed that quick sales were needed to keep the security burden and maintenance of the stadium from falling onto the shoulders of taxpayers so Braves moved out. On August 18, 2016, the State of Georgia and the Atlanta-Fulton Regional Recreation Authority reached a temporary purchase agreement for Turner Field, and the purchase and redevelopment plan was approved by the Council of the University of Georgia Systems Regents on November 9, 2016. On January 5, 2017, Turner Field property to the State of Georgia was officially closed, with a stadium conversion project starting in February 2017. The conversion of the stadium will take place during several phases, while the first stage finishes in time for Georgia State's opener on 31 August 2017.

Last game

Braves' final match at Turner Field is October 2, 2016, an interleague match against the Detroit Tigers, which Braves won 1-0; the last run was scored by Adonis Garcia from the flying ball of a sacrifice from Freddie Freeman, and Julio TeherÃÆ'¡n had 12 shots in career highs to earn the last win on the field.

Before the game, Braves launched their All-Turner Field Team, as voted on the team's website by fans: Javy LÃÆ'³pez catcher, first baseman Freddie Freeman, second baseman Marcus Giles, shortstop Rafael Furcal, third baseman Chipper Jones, leaving fielder Ryan Klesko, center fielder Andruw Jones, fielder Brian Jordan, utility player Martin Prado, Greg Maddux pitcher Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Tim Hudson and Julio Teheran and pitcher helper Craig Kimbrel.

In a post-match ceremony, home plate was removed and sent to SunTrust Park by Hank Aaron and Braves chairman Terry McGuirk, as those remaining at Turner Field watched his progress on the video board. While home plate was driven on Interstate 75, the ceremony included a parade of fans representing each state in the Braves television footsteps and speeches from Braves officials, followed by simultaneous performances from the Brave 'Tomahawk Chop' signature sequel by the still crowd at Turner Field and a small meeting of team executives and Little Leaguers at SunTrust Park.

Stadium first

The first game played at Turner Field was an exhibition match against the New York Yankees on 29 March 1997; Starter Braves Tom Glavine tossed the first pitch, swinging fastball blow, to Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter and Braves won the 2-0 exhibition match. The first regular season match played at Turner Field was on April 4, 1997 against the Chicago Cubs. The Braves lost 4-3 in the eighth inning when Chipper Jones drove in a binding run. Single Michael Tucker gave Braves an edge as they won their first regular season game at Turner Field 5-4.

The first postseason game played at Turner Field was also during the 1997 season between Braves and Houston Astros in NLDS. Greg Maddux started pitching the full game, giving up just one run and leading the Braves to a 2-1 victory. After sweeping Astros, Braves went on to the NLCS, where Tom Glavine won the first NLCS win at Turner Field; However, Braves lost to World Series champion-champion Florida Marlins.

The first Game World Series ever played at Turner Field was Game 1 of the 1999 World Series, where the early pitchers Maddux and Braves were beaten 4-1 by New York Yankees' Orlando HernÃÆ'¡ndez and MVP series Mariano Rivera; Braves went on to lose the series by sweeping four games. The only Major League Baseball All-Star game ever played at Turner Field was in 2000. Atlanta Chipper Jones hit a single home run in the game, and winger Braves Andruw Jones cruised when the National League was beaten 6-3.

Turner Field is also home to the first NL Wild Card Game in 2012 between Braves and St.. Louis Cardinals. The Braves were behind 6-3 at the base of the inning 8 when Andrelton Simmons hit a flying ball into a shallow left field that fell between Cardinals shortstop Pete Kozma and left fielder Matt Holliday. Umpire Sam Holbrook called Simmons out, citing the middle fly rule. If the fly fly is not mentioned, Simmons will be credited with one and Atlanta will have a base filled with one. Fans at Turner Field began to litter the field with debris, prompting the game to be delayed for 19 minutes. The Braves lost the game 6-3, ending their season.

Remodeling

Significant renovation to the stadium was put into effect for the 2005 season. Among the fixes was the installation of a $ 10 million video display, which was then listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's largest high definition video board. The video board was kept by the State of Georgia as part of the football stadium.

Other renovations that year included the addition of a 1,080 foot (329 meter) LED length to the upper deck of the stadium, especially for advertising purposes.

Field vista's left field field is dominated by advertising equipment from two iconic Atlanta companies. In 2009, a large new Coca-Cola bottle was installed behind the left field. Replacing previous versions made of various pieces of baseball equipment, new bottles display HD displays around labels, as well as LED lights. In addition to the second iteration of the Coca-Cola Turner Field bottle is a 40-foot (12 ft) Chick-fil-A cow, added in 2008. Wearing a Braves hat, the cow performs Tomahawk Chop along with fans while holding the mark by rotating slogans which binds to the successful "Eat Mor Chikin" advertising campaign in the fast food chain. The cow was moved from Turner Field after the 2015 season for repairs before it was installed at SunTrust Park.

Bulk Baseball Stadium record

The highest recorded attendance for the playoff game, and overall, was 54,357 and was set on 5 October 2003, against the Chicago Cubs. The amount includes a standing room ticket.

The longest game by time, and in Braves history, is played on July 26-27, 2011 between Braves and Pittsburgh Pirates. The match lasted 6 hours and 39 minutes with Braves winning controversially 4-3 in 19 innings. It was removed for the 2013 season and replaced with a modern representation of the player's first name followed by their number and last name (like Dale 3 Murphy), located on the club's left and right side.

Of the 10 Braves whose numbers were retired before the closing of Turner Field, nine (Spahn, Mathews, Aaron, Niekro, Cox, Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz and Jones) were elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, while Murphy's eligibility ended without election.
