Histori

Herbert Hill Peyton started the company in 1960 with a gas station at Northside Jacksonville. The company grew during the 1960s with additional stations in the southeastern United States. The name "Gate" comes from the slogan city of Jacksonville, "The Gateway to Florida". In response to the 1973 oil crisis, companies began diversifying and adding convenience items to their refueling shelves.

  • The first alternative investment is a farm of 500 acres (2.0 km km 2 ) in Hastings, Florida that grows potatoes. Overall, it was a lucrative investment, but the asset was eventually sold.
  • The Roofing Gate Company was created in 1978 in Green Cove Springs, Florida to produce bitumen. The business was very successful and the factory was expanded and operated 24/7 before being sold to TAMKO Building Products in 1994.
  • In the early 1980s, Peyton transformed companies from petroleum retailers into diversified conglomerates. He bought Florida Stockton real estate ownership, Whatley, Davin & amp; Co, which was then owned by Phillips Petroleum Company for $ 60 million. The purchase contains over 16,000 acres (65Ã, km 2 ) of land in northeastern Florida including the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club, packages at Ponte Vedra Beach, Deerwood Country Club, Southpoint and Guana channels. >
  • The first property sold is 8,000 acres (32Ã, km 2 ) from the primitive forest on the Guana River. Florida's Department of Environmental Protection bought the property for $ 49 million to become Guana River State Park.
  • The early J. Turner Butler Boulevard segment (State Road 202) was completed in 1979 and access to the Southpoint area was enhanced, facilitating the development of the eastern area of Interstate 95. Gate partnered with Bryant Skinner Company in 1980 to create 250-acre (1.0Ã , Km 2 ) Southpoint office park .
  • When the Houdaille-Duval manufacturer decided to remove their Florida construction division in 1980, Gate bought a Jacksonville prestressed concrete factory and five US $ 10 million asphalt mills. The asphalt factory sold a year later for a significant profit. The gate then offered $ 1 million for the Houdaille-Duval prestressed concrete factory in Houston, which is worth twice that amount. H-D accepted the offer, and the two concrete factories were still an asset of Gate Concrete .
  • Epping Forest, a 58-acre (230,000 m 2 ) estate of the former Alfred I. du Pont estate, was obtained from Raymond K. Mason in 1984 for $ 8 million. At that time, Mason was Chairman of the Charter Company, which faced bankruptcy.
  • Westinghouse Electric Company, which jointly developed the east side of Blount Island with Tenneco in the early 1970s at a cost of $ 125 million in failed Offshore Power Systems efforts, sold the property to Gate for $ 17 million in 1985. On November 1990, the 20-year-old stork, once the largest in the world, was sold to China's $ 3 million State Shipbuilding Corporation. It was dismantled and shipped overseas.
  • Gate bought 28 7-Eleven supermarkets in Jacksonville and Alachua county in 1990, along with unsuitable agreements for 20 years.
  • The Gulf Life Tower , one of the tallest buildings in Jacksonville, was on the market for nearly three years at a asking price of $ 30 million. Gate bought it from American General Insurance (now American International Group) in 1993 for less than $ 10 million, spent several million dollars to renovate it, and named it the Riverplace Tower.
  • In February 2008, Gate acquired 150 West Main Street, a 20-storey office building in Norfolk, Virginia.
  • Filling stations and department stores are still the core business of the company, operating from the company's 57,000 square foot (5,300 m) corporate headquarters in Mandarin. Elkins Constructors built this facility in 1999. The Peyton family owns 80% of the company, and the remainder belongs to "Brother": long-term employees (male and female).

John Peyton, the eldest son of company founder Herb Peyton, took an eight-year leave from the Gate to serve two periods as mayor of Jacksonville from 2003 to 2011. John returned to the family business and was named the president of the company when his father, Herb retired on January 3, 2012. Herb became Chairman and Mitchell Rhodes promoted to Chief Operating Officer. Hill Peyton became Vice President of Marketing. In Jacksonville, Gate is the 16th largest privately owned company in Northeast Florida.

In 1986, the United States Marine Corps established the Biennial Maintenance Command (BMC) in Blount Island, Jacksonville, Florida on 262 acres (1.06 km 2 ) hired from GMP for $ 11 million annually. The lease between the GMP and the Marine Corps will end in 2004, so in 2000, the Corp declared their intention to buy the property when the lease expired. The Marine Corps budget includes $ 115.7 million for acquisitions, but extended negotiations do not result in an agreement. The gates argue that the land is worth between $ 160 million and $ 200 million, so in August 2004, the Marine Corps seized 1,100 acres (4.5 km 2 ) at Blount Island (the entire island of Blount Island ownership gate ) by the flagship domain and paid $ 101 million (then increased to $ 160 million). When the land is confiscated for use that is of benefit to the public, the government is required to pay the landowner "only compensation", so Gate asks the jury to decide the value of the land. On November 14, 2005, a jury ruled that the government should pay $ 160 million for the package.

      Future

Ethanol Gate and Hamilton County, Florida officials reached an agreement in early 2004 for the Gate to build a $ 160 million ethanol plant on 90 hectares (360,000m 2 ) north of White Springs, Florida. The plant will have the capacity to produce 50 million gallons of ethanol each year and employ nearly 50. By the end of 2006, the company announced that due to skyrocketing construction costs and fluctuations in ethanol prices, their original plans are no longer viable and will be discarded.

In October 2007, the Biofuels Gate announced plans to build a terminal at a port in Jacksonville to receive and store Ethanol, which will be mixed with gasoline before it is distributed to the gas station. Nationwide, ethanol production increased 33% over the previous year creating an oversupply as some distributors are prepared to do the mixing process. Another product to consider is biodiesel, which is made from natural oils. The $ 90 million, 55 million gallon facility will have rail and ship capabilities and is expected to be completed by 2010.
