Careers

She started her entertainment career at the age of 12, working in local production of The King and I for $ 150 a week. In the late 1960s, Duncan was an unknown actress in Los Angeles when he was chosen to part in an advertisement for United California Bank (then First Interstate Bank and later joined Wells Fargo), describing a bank teller who found it impossible to pronounce the Greek name of the customer "Nicholas H. Janopaparopoulos", despite several attempts. He then apologized, "Do you mind if I call you 'Nick'?" In 1968, he spent a short time acting in the soap opera Search for Tomorrow.

In 1970, he was crowned one of the "most promising faces tomorrow" by magazine Time . Also that year, he starred in the rise of Broadway The Boy Friend , which he received good reviews. Duncan made his feature film debut starring Dean Jones in the Walt Disney family comedy The Million Dollar Duck . He then played "Amy Cooper" in Paramount's Star Spangled Girl , based on Broadway's drama by Neil Simon. Both films are performing poorly in the box office. In the fall of 1971, Duncan starred as "Sandy Stockton" on the CBS Funny Face sitcom. The program is put on a prime-time Saturday night schedule between All in the Family and The New Dick Van Dyke Show. The critics rejected the show, but praised Duncan, especially the TV Guides columnist Cleveland Amory, who described him as "an outstanding comedian".

Meanwhile, shortly after the premiere, Duncan underwent an operation to remove benign brain tumors behind the left optic nerve. As a result, he loses sight in the eye, but is not replaced with prosthetic eyes, as some urban myths claim. Although Duncan's recovery from the operation was fast, CBS delayed production on the show until the following year, after the 12th installment was filmed; original pilot series served as episode 13 (and last). Initially, Nielsen's ranking for Cute Face was low, ranking in the lower 50's; finally, they climbed to 17th place, and it is considered the most favored new event of the television season. For all of his efforts, Duncan received a nomination for an Emmy Award for "Outstanding Continuous Performance by the Actress in a Main Role in a Comedy Series". In September 1972, the program returned as a The Sandy Duncan Show , with a revised format and a new author; it also has a new time slot, on Sunday at 8:30 pm. The critical reaction to the show was similar to that for Cute Face, but without the powerful late-night outcome of All in the Family , its ranking declined. After 13 episodes, CBS canceled the series. In 1976, Duncan played the title role in the TV music adaptation of Pinocchio, featuring Danny Kaye as "Mister Geppetto" and Flip Wilson as "the Fox". She is also a guest star on the first season episode of The Muppet Show where, contrary to a common misconception, she is not the first one to karate-chopped by Miss Piggy, but she shares a raucous moment recalling "The Banana Sketch" with Fozzie Bear. Furthermore, for her performance as "Missy Anne Reynolds" in the Roots miniseries, she earned another Emmy nomination. That's when he came back to Broadway for years. In 1979, his role as lead actor at Peter Pan won a lot of awards. He also has a substitute role in My One and Only and Chicago.

Duncan was nominated for the Tony Award three times: in 1969, as "The Main Actor (Musical)" in Canterbury Tales ; in 1971, as "Best Actress (Musical)" in The Boy Friend ; and in 1980, as "Best Actress (Musical)" at Peter Pan.

In 1972, the animated version of Duncan (who contributed his own voice) appeared in "Sandy Duncan Jekyll and Hyde", an episode of the movie CBS Saturday morning cartoon The New Scooby-Doo Movies . In 1976, he became a guest star on The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman played the role of Gillian in the episode "The Return of Bigfoot". In 1978, he starred in the Disney movie The Cat from Outer Space with Ken Berry, Harry Morgan, and Roddy McDowall. From the mid-1970s to the 80s, Duncan was the commercial spokesperson for the introduction of Wheat Thins Nabisco crackers.

In 1981, he voiced Vixey on The Fox and the Hound . In 1984, he starred in a song and dance review called 5-6-7-8... Dance! at Radio City Music Hall and provides voice work for My Little Pony's special TV Rescue at Midnight Castle as Firefly and Applejack. From 1986 to 1987, he changed his role as Firefly on the TV series My Little Pony 'n Friends . In 1987, he joined the cast of NBC Valerie's Family (formerly known as Valerie , later renamed The Hogan Family ) after Valerie Harper was dismissed from the sitcom. Duncan starred as a sister-in-law matriarch, Sandy Hogan, who moved with her brother Mike (Josh Taylor) and three sons to help raise the family after Valerie Hogan's death. Duncan remained with the series through a cancellation in 1991 (the last season that aired on CBS). In 1988, he worked on the first three videos of Barney and the Backyard Gang. Duncan was asked to take part in Barney & amp; Friends the television series, but declined the offer. In 1991, he voiced Peepers rats in Rock-a-Doodle. In 1994, he voiced Queen Uberta at The Swan Princess.

In 2003, he appeared in a rotating staging outside Broadway staged from Wit & amp; Wisdom . In May 2008, he performed one of the leading role in music No, No, Nanette ; an annual serial production of the City Center Encores! in New York City. In April 2009, he played a major role in the drama Driving Miss Daisy at Casa MaÃÆ'Â ± ana Theater in Fort Worth, Texas. In September 2009, he played a leading role in the Tennessee Williams drama The Glass Menagerie at the Mountain Playhouse in Jennerstown, Pennsylvania. He has also been in many stages of production, including The King and I.

On February 12, 2016, Duncan entered the role of Madame du Maurier in the production of Broadway Finding Neverland. On February 17, the show producer announces that he will take a temporary leave due to family obligations.

Personal life

He met singer-actor Bruce Scott (born Bruce Scott Zaharaides) during the production of Off-Broadway , and they married in September 1968. Their divorce, settled in October 1972, was due to the success of Duncan and rose to a star. Duncan told the People magazine in 1979 that "It was very threatening for Bruce."

Her second marriage was Dr. Thomas Calcaterra on January 10, 1973; this went on until 1979. Duncan met Calcaterra when he became a surgical consultant for brain tumor surgery, after which they started dating. The marriage also failed, according to Duncan, for the demands of his nightclub action in 1978 and his refusal to stay home and try to be a good "doctor wife".

Since July 21, 1980, he has been married to Don Correia, six years younger than him. They have two sons, Jeffrey (born October 5, 1982) and Michael (born March 19, 1984). She and her husband live in New York City. His father, Mancil Ray Duncan, died on December 22, 1994, and his mother died on December 23, 1997. Taylorville, Illinois (near Springfield) named the road in his honor, "Sandy Duncan Drive"; his character on the Funny Face and Sandy Duncan Show Sandy Stockton comes from Taylorville.

Duncan survived a brain tumor located behind the left optic nerve and surgery to remove it in 1971. He lost sight in his left eye, but as the eye was still tracked with his right eye, Duncan and his doctor chose to leave his natural eye in place.
