The Southwest Athletic Conference (SWAC ) is a college athletics conference headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, consisting of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the United States South. It participates in the NCAA Division I for all sports; in football, he participated in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), formerly referred to as Division I-AA.

SWAC is widely considered to be HBCU's premiere and ranking among the country's elite in terms of alumni affiliated with professional sports teams, particularly in football. On the green field, the conference has been the biggest draw result at the NCAA Football Championship (FCS) level, leading the country in an average home attendance for 37 of the 38-year-old FCS presence. In 1994, SWAC fell only 40,000 short fans into non-Football Bowls The first conference subdivision to attract a million fans to their home games.

Histori

In 1920, athletics officials from six Texas HBCU - C.H. More from Bishop College, Red Randolph and C.H. Patterson from Paul Quinn College, E.G. Evans, H.J. Evans and H.J. Starns of Prairie View A & amp; M, D.C. Fuller from Texas College and G. Whitte Jordan of Wiley College - meet in Houston, Texas, to discuss common interests. At this meeting, they agreed to form a new league, SWAC.

Paul Quinn became the first original member to retire from the league in 1929. When Langston University of Oklahoma was accepted at the conference two years later, he began the migration of state-backed institutions to SWAC. Southern University entered the ranks in 1934, followed by Arkansas AM & amp; N (now the University of Arkansas in Pine Bluff) in 1936 and Texas Southern University in 1954.

The rapid growth in enrollment of state-supported schools makes it difficult for church-backed schools to finance their athletic programs and one by one they are victims of the ever-increasing skills of state-sponsored universities. Bishop withdrew from the conference in 1956, Langston in 1957 and Huston-Tillotson (formerly Samuel Huston) in 1959, one year after the entry of two state-backed schools: Grambling College and Jackson State College. The in and out cycle continued in 1961 when Texas College resigned, followed by the reception of Alcorn A & amp; M (now the State University of Alcorn) in 1962. Wiley left in 1968, the same year Mississippi Valley State College entered. Arkansas AM & amp; N came out in 1970 and Alabama State University entered in 1982. Arkansas-Pine Bluff (formerly Arkansas AM & N) rejoined SWAC on July 1, 1997, regaining full member status one year later. Alabama A & amp; M University became the tenth member of the conference when it became a full member in September 1999 after a one year period as a member of the affiliated SWAC. Most of the former SWAC members who have left the conference are currently part of the Red River Athletics Conference NAIA.

Competition

SWAC is one of three conferences - the other being the Ivy League and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference - which do not participate in the FCS football playoffs. SWAC instead splits its schools into two divisions, and plays a conference championship game. Three of the SWAC team, the Alabama State in Turkey's Classic and Grambling Days and the South in Bayou Classic, played their last game of regular season on Thanksgiving weekend, preventing the SWAC Championship from being decided until the first weekend of December, long after the tournament is underway. SWAC is sometimes a participant in bowl games, most recently the Celebration Bowl, which features SWAC as one of its tie-ins.

The current championship competitions offered by SWAC include competitions for men in baseball, basketball, cross country, soccer, golf, indoor tracks, outdoor & amp; field and tennis. Women's competition is offered in sports basketball, bowling, cross country, golf, indoor track, outdoor track & amp; field, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball.

    SWAC Championship

    Football

Before dividing into divisions and using postseason championship games to determine the overall champion, SWAC determines its champions by winning-percentage against the conference's opponents in regular season games.

In 1933 Langston appeared to win the title straight with a 4-0 conference record after a regular season, while Wiley finished 4-1, and Prairie View A & M finished 3-1. Langston was invited to the Prairie View Bowl, which was won by Prairie View. The Panthers later declared themselves as SWAC champions despite their claims based on postseason games. The SWAC seems to recognize both schools' claims for titles in the conference football media guide, although several other sources include Michael Hurd's Black College Football, 1892-1992: Hundred Years of History, Education, and Pride (1993) as well listed Wiley as an additional champion, apparently because the three schools have a 4-1 record against the conference opponents if the postseason game is incorporated into the regular season conference standings.

Prairie View emptied its 1941 championship. No championship was given in 1943 due to World War II. The State of Grambling emptied the 1975 championship for violation of the SWAC rules for the scheduling of opponents.

Games from 1999-2012 are played at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama. The Conference moves the game in 2013 to the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. Starting in 2015, SWAC winners will play the winners of the MEAC conference in the entire HBCU championship game bowl called the Celebration Bowl at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. MEAC submitted its automatic offer to FCS Playoffs for this game.

Texas Southern emptied the 2010 championship for violation of NCAA rules.

Since splitting into the western and eastern divisions and using the postseason championship game to decide the overall champion, SWAC determines the division champions with a win-percentage against the conference opponents in the regular season of play. For the 1999 season alone, inter-division conference games were not counted in the conference standings. Each division champion or top seeded seed went up to the championship game.

Texas Southern emptied the 2010 division championship for violation of the NCAA rules.

Note: the star sign represents the division's flagship superior champion and a representative at the SWAC Championship Game; the double asterisk sign indicates that the division champion's representatives are not eligible for the SWAC Championship Game due to a violation of SWAC rules applicable from 2011 to 2014 related to the APR score

    Men's basket

SWAC Basketball semi-final and basketball tournaments are held at Delmar Fieldhouse for $ 35 million (opened in 2017) near Uptown Houston. In the 2017 tournament, they featured eight three-day layout teams with quarter-final rounds held on campus sites. This changes the 10-team format, the previous five days of the tournament. The top seeded team will host a combined match of eight leaving two days for round trip and practice. The tournament ends with a semi-finals and championship in Delmar Fieldhouse Houston. Tournament winners get an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Tournament respectively. National championship games are broadcast live annually on the ESPN network.
