" Thrift Shop " is a song from American hip hop duo Macklemore & amp; Ryan Lewis. The album was released on August 27, 2012 as Macklemore's 8th career single and fourth single from their debut studio album, The Heist (2012). It features vocals by Wanz. The song was made to show Macklemore awards for thrift stores and save money, rather than showing off expensive items like many rappers. Many music reviewers praised the song for its cute lyrics and social criticism.

Though released on the independent label Macklemore with distribution by the Alternative Distribution Alliance (ADA), a Warner Music Group company, the single was a sleeping hit. It reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and has since sold over 7 million copies in the US alone. The song also reached number one in the UK, Ireland, Canada, France, Denmark, the Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand. The music video was released simultaneously with the song on August 29, 2012, and has had over 1.1 billion views on YouTube. In 2014, the single won two Grammy Awards, one for Best Rap Performance and one for Best Rap Song.

Background and composition

This song illustrates Macklemore's interest in buying cheap clothing from thrift stores, underestimating designer labels and trends. He claims to enjoy wearing "your grandfather's clothes" and impulsively buying stealing feathers that look sharp but suspicious just because "it's 99 cents". Macklemore spoke to MTV News about the meaning of the song. "Rappers are talking about, oh I bought this and I bought it, and I spent a lot of money and I made it rain, and kind of champagne and paint the club, and this is kind of note otherwise," he explained. "It's the opposite of that. It's like standing up, let's save some money, let's save some money, let's spend as little as possible and look as fresh as possible at the same time."

Asked why he thought the track was so successful, Macklemore replied, "I think hip-hop runs in waves, and it's something different. This is a concept. This is clearly contrary to the status quo of what people are usually criticized. This is a song that's against everything. How much can you save? How fresh can you look like it does not look like someone else? And on top of that, you have a contagious knock and a hook that sticks in people's heads. "

"Thrift Shop" is written in G key? is minor and has a tempo of 96 beats per minute. The song is clearly supported by a looping saxophone melody.

Critical reception

The song received widespread critical acclaim. It has been called a critique of the common product placement in modern hip hop, but New York Times critic Jon Caramanica wrote, "[I] is not strong enough from the hip hop-extravagance clich he wants." Robert Copsey from Digital Spy gives 5 songs from 5 stars, calling it "a rare animal from a song - original, bold and really funny music." Common Sense Media's Kyle Jackson says it is "hilarious and catches the hipster zeitgeist perfectly", defining the song as "eclectic and socially conscious of the turism of lyricism and electronic beats." Entertainment Weekly named the song as the 18th best single of 2012. This song is # 1 in Triple J Hottest's 100th anniversary of 2012.
