US. Dollar Index ( USDX , DXY , DX ) is the index (or size) of the United States dollar relative value to the currency basket foreigners, often referred to as the currency basket of US trading partners. The index rises when the US dollar gains "strength" (value) when compared to other currencies.

Indexes are retained and issued by ICE (Intercontinental Exchange, Inc.), under the name "US Dollar Index" registered trademark.

This is the weighted geometric average of the dollar value relative to the following preferred currencies:

  • Euro (EUR), 57.6% weight
  • Japanese Yen (JPY) 13.6% by weight
  • Pounds Sterling (GBP), 11.9% by weight
  • Canadian Dollar (CAD), 9.1% weight
  • Swedish Krona (SEK), 4.2% by weight
  • Swiss franc (CHF) 3.6% by weight

Histori

USDX began in March 1973, immediately after the demolition of the Bretton Woods system. Initially, the value of the US Dollar Index was 100,000. It has since been traded as high as 164.7200 in February 1985, and as low as 70,698 on March 16, 2008.

The making of the "basket" was changed only once, when some European currencies were inserted by the euro in early 1999. Some commentators say that the make-up of the "basket" is too late to be revised like China, Mexico. , South Korea and Brazil are the main trading partners currently not part of the index while Sweden and Switzerland continue as part of the index.
