A head shop is a retail outlet specializing in equipment used for the consumption of marijuana and tobacco and related items related to marijuana culture and related saga. Products may include magazines (for example, about cannabis culture, marijuana cultivation, tattoos and music), clothing, and home decor (eg, wall posters and wall hangings depicting drug themes such as marijuana, band jams such as The Grateful Dead, psychedelic art, etc..). Some head shops also sell oddities, such as antique walking sticks and sex toys. Since the 1980s, some head shops have sold clothing related to heavy metal or punk subcultures, such as T-shirt bands and patch cloths with band logos, studded bracelets, bullet belts and leather boots. Head stores emerged from hippie counterculture in the late 1960s, and many of them had close ties to the anti-Vietnam War movement as well as groups in the legal movement of marijuana such as LeMar, Amorphia, and the National Organization for Reform of Marijuana Law.

The products offered usually include hashish pipes, "one hit" pipes; screen pipe; bong (also called a water pipe); a roach clip (used to suck the tip of the "marijuana" together); vaporizers are used to inhale THC vapors from cannabis; roll paper; rolling machine; small scale scales; small ziplock bag; cannabis grinder; poster and blacklight responsive blacklight; incense; cigarette lighter; "stash", which includes a range of standard consumer products such as clocks, books, cans of cleaning powders and toilet brushes that have hidden compartments for marijuana and incognito "savings boxes" in the form of cans or wooden containers to store marijuana; and highest laws such as whipped-cream chargers (containing nitrous oxide) and Salvia divinorum (both illegal in some countries and some US states for recreational purposes). Some head shops also sell items used for the cultivation of marijuana plants at home, such as hydroponic equipment and lamps and guidebooks on cultivation. Since the 2000s, some head stores also sell electric cigarettes and scented liquids used with this device.

Histori

American head shops originated in the 1960s in cities with high concentrations of college-age youth, often grown from independently owned posters or wax shops. Historically, US heads of shops have mushroomed in St. Mark's Place in the East Village of New York City, in West Los Angeles, in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco, and in Chicago's Old City. The source quoted Psychedelic Shop at Haight Street in San Francisco as the first head store in the United States. Operated by US Army veteran Ron Thelin and his younger brother, Jay, opened on January 3, 1966. Four months later Jeff Glick opened a "Head Shop" on East Ninth Street in New York City. Also in 1966, The Birmingham Balloon Company opened at 113 Fry Street in Denton, Texas.

From 1968-c. 1975, head shops serve as an important outlet for underground newspapers and underground comixes Robert Crumb and other counter-cultural cartoonists, who have little access to existing kiosk distribution channels.

The popularity of the stores has finally faded with the aging generation of baby boomers of that era, as well as the 1973 US Supreme Court decision, Miller v. California, who found that local communities can decide on their own First Amendment standard by referring to obscenity. In the mid-1970s, the sale of illicit drugs was banned in many places, and the distribution network for comics and underground newspapers dried up. In addition, mainstream retail finds and co-opts niche aspects of head store market, such as acid stones and environmentally friendly products.

Legality

ireland

Head stores exist and are legal in Ireland, and are reported by the authorities to be opened at a rate of one per week in January 2010. The legality of the stores has been discussed in Seanad ÃÆ'â € ireann, and a motion is authorized to ask the Government to arrange the sale of the product. Some politicians support banning shops while others argue that banning legal liquor purchases would be a "big mistake" that would allow illegal street traders to flourish.

During early 2010, a number of bombing incidents and arson of head shops occurred throughout the country. Some attacks were tracked to unsatisfied drug dealers. A petrol bomb attack occurred in the home country of then Justice Minister Dermot Ahern, and a few hours later, plans for legislation to regulate head shops were under way.

Many head store products became illegal in Ireland on August 23, 2010 when the new Criminal Justice Act (Psychoactive Substance) 2010 became law. This law empowers GardaÃÆ' (Irish Police) to seek a court order to shut down head shops suspected of selling products such as drugs, with the responsibility of the owners to prove that they are not doing so.

United States

In the United States, the heads of legal stores as long as they sell the goods used for legal materials. For this reason, store heads usually show signs claiming that products such as glass pipes and spice grinders are "only for tobacco use".

Head stores have been targeted by the Drug Enforcement Administration. In 2003, the US Department of Justice charged fifty-five people with alleged drug trafficking in Idaho, Texas, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Florida and Ohio as part of Operation Headhunter and Operation Pipe Dreams i>, including comedian Tommy Chong. During the investigation, government officials also targeted customers from stores, arresting those who have drugs such as marijuana and heroin. Chong was caught by sending a delivery by mail. Today, online shops are also becoming prevalent; There are hundreds of head stores that are willing to sell their products online.

Legality of marijuana varies widely in the United States, but in countries where medical marijuana is legal, marijuana clinics often double as head stores.

In particular, in the state of Florida, goods, "designed to be used in swallowing, inhaling, or introducing cannabis, cocaine, marijuana, hemp oil, or nitrous oxide into the human body" are illegal, while "pipes are mainly made of briar, meerschaum, clay, or corn cob "is legal.

To combat drug dispensing laws, the signs of the head store suggest that the product being sold is "for tobacco use only" or "not for use with illegal substances". In many head stores, a sign will be installed (and often verbally affirmed) stating that customer references regarding the use of store products for illegal drug use will result in suspension of all sales for that period, and/or the removal of customers from the store. In some stores, just saying the word "bong" is the reason to be excluded from the store.
