History

Hundred people have many different values. In England around the year 1300, different "hundreds" ( centem in Latin Medieval) was defined. The Weights and Measures Act of 1835 formally assigns a hundred current weight of 112 pounds. Use in trading sizes by "cental", "hundredusight", or "quintal" has now been banned in the UK under the Weight and Size Act. 1985.

The United States and Canada came to use the term "one hundred classes" to refer to a 100 pound unit. This measure was specifically prohibited from British use - on the risk of being sued for fraud - by the Weight and Size Act in 1824 but, in 1879, the act was legalized under the name "cental" in response to the legislative pressures of importing British merchants wheat and tobacco from the United States.

Use

One hundred short weights are commonly used in the US in the sale of livestock and some grains of cereals and vegetable oil, paper, and concrete additives and on some commodities on futures exchanges.

Several decades ago, commodities weighed in weight form include cattle, fodder, fertilizer, coal, some industrial chemicals, other industrial materials, and so on. However, due to the increase in metrics in most English-speaking countries, it is now under-utilized. Church bell speakers use this unit in general, although church bell manufacturers are increasingly moving to metric systems.

Older blacksmith ansmil often stamped with a three-digit number indicating its total weight in the weight of one hundred, one-quarter weight (28 lb), and pound. Thus, an anvil labeled "1.1.8" will have a weight of 148 lb (112 lb 28 lb 8 lb).
