A million-dollar wound (American English) or Blighty wound (English English, now out of date) is a military slang that refers to the type of wound received in considerable combat serious to get soldiers sent away from the battle, but not fatal or permanently paralyze.

In his memoir of World War II With Old Breed Eugene Sledge wrote that during the Battle of Okinawa, the day after he tried to convince a fellow US Marine who believed he would die soon,
I was very happy to see the friend I spoke to the night before. He wore a triumphant display of satisfaction, shook hands with me, and grinned as the stretcher team carried him with a bloody bandage on his leg. God or opportunity - depending on one's faith - has saved his life and lifted the burden of fear and terror in battle by giving him a million dollars wound. He has done his job, and the war has ended for him. She was in pain, but she was lucky. Many others are not as fortunate as the last few days.
