History
The Golden Horseshoe Stage unofficially opened on July 13, 1955, as the Golden Horseshoe Saloon, when Walt and Lillian Disney, along with dozens of guests, celebrated their 30th anniversary with a private party and the original Golden Horseshoe Revue premiere.
On Saturday, July 16, 1955, the Golden Horseshoe opened a day early for the company's personal sponsor party. The event marks Wally Boag's first official appearance as Pecos Bill/Traveling Salesman at the Golden Horseshoe Saloon.
The first show that opened on stage was the Slue Foot Sue's Golden Horseshoe Revue (spoiled spelled "Review") on July 17, 1955. The music revue was written by Charles LaVere, who served as the event pianist, and used the lyrics by Tom Adair. The script for this production was co-written by two stars, Donald Novis and Wally Boag. This variety show recorded 39,000 times and registered in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest musical of all time. One feature of this event is to have the children of the audience sing and dance on stage. "Davy Crockett" is a favorite song performed by the guests.
In 1962, Ron Miller, his son-in-law to Walt Disney, directed a movie made for television of the same title. The film stars Disney actress Annette Funicello, Ed Wynn, Betty Taylor, Gene Sheldon, Wally Boag and Walt Disney himself.

At the end of 2012, Disney announced a limited event titled "A Salute to the Golden Horseshoe Revue", described as "a tribute to the fun and family-friendly variety of musical events of the past." The event is scheduled for a short period from January 10 to February 4, 2013, every Thursday through Monday. It features songs and dance numbers from the original Golden Horseshoe Revue , such as "Hello, All", "Good Difficult Man", "Stomach to Bar" and "Can-Can".
Other events
Various other nightly entertainment has appeared there for years, including Alabama, Louis Armstrong, Actor Pat O'Brien, various jazz and gospel groups and special events. It was also used during the 1950's as a place for dancing couples during Disneyland's 'Date Nite' promotion.
And finally it is the venue for the Annual Guide Tour Guides, which collect money for various children's charities over the years. Park managers are often raised on stage to perform (like posing with a beach ball) with a tour guide. This fact helps sell tickets and keeps the event going on for years until the expanded park hours/days drive the event.
Architecture
The inside of the saloon was designed by Harper Goff, the same person who designed the saloon set for the movie Calamity Jane starring Doris Day. Goff has worked on exterior design for buildings on Main Street, USA when asked to work on this project.
