5.11 Tactical (pronounced 'five eleven tactical') is an Irvine, California-based outfit consisting of uniforms and tactical equipment for the military, law enforcement and public safety personnel. The company also operates a chain of retail stores, with 13 locations as of January 2017.

5.11 Tactical begins in Modesto, California as a clothing line created by mountaineer Royal Robbins. After reaching the summit of climbing in Yosemite California, he noticed that the pants he wore were not suitable for climbing. Robbins decided that he needed to design something more durable and with better functionality. He owns a boot and clothing company and started producing pants under the name "5.11" which has a tactical strap and a trademark slash pocket design in 1968.
The name "5.11" comes from the highest difficulty level of rock climbing listed in the Yosemite Decimal System in Yosemite National Park, developed by Robbins in the 1950s. The level of difficulty is jokingly defined as, "After a thorough examination, you conclude that this step is clearly impossible; however, sometimes someone actually does it."
Robbins sold a 51% stake in his company to Dan Costa in 1999, which, after much downsizing, noticed that the 5.11 tactical pants became popular at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
Costa bought the entire company in 2002 and eventually sold Royal Apparel Robbins back to Robbins in 2003, but continued to use the Tactical brand 5.11 and split a new company called 511 Inc. or 5.11 Tactical. Partnering with the FBI, Dan Costa and his colleague Francisco Morales began creating additional tactical clothing and refining existing lines. In 2006 5.11 Tactical was ranked No. 211 on Inc. magazine list. of the 500 fastest growing companies in the country.
TA Associates, a Boston private equity firm, bought a majority stake in $ 5.11 Tactical at $ 305 million in 2007.
In 2012, 5.11 Tactical buys special outdoor brand clothing in Seattle, Beyond Clothing LLC, for an undisclosed amount.
The April Fool's joke in the same year resulted in the production of contemporary T-shirt Tactical skirts. Also in 2012, the company announced it was moving its development work to Irvine, California, while leaving some functionality in Modesto.
In 2014, the company evolved into an open and retail demonstration location in Riverside and Las Vegas, and two years later opened stores in California, Colorado, Texas, Australia, Florida, and Utah.
In 2016, the company was acquired by Compass Diversified Holdings for USD $ 401 million.
